Nigeria General Election 2011

Election With Many Rules

We had set out at sunrise to monitor the Parliamentary election exercise in some local government areas in Lagos state.

On getting to Ikotun area of the state, which falls under Alimosho LG, we saw electorates sleeping while some were waiting endlessly for INEC officials at some centers about 9:11 am. We later proceeded to the ward centers to find out what must have caused the delay.

On getting there, We discovered some NYSC/INEC officials were at 10:55 am still sorting materials that were supposed to have gotten to the voting zones while some were waiting for their unit head for directives. Although the centre head said the materials arrived very late and they were doing all within their means to meet up time.

The registration exercise was planned to commence by 8:00 am and end by 12noon, before voting commences proper at 12:30pm.

The situations were seen in most local government area we visited, while some people were waiting endlessly for INEC officials in their polling stations. At some wards, they were no sign of officials at about 12:39am.

After a long queue under the sun by electorates, INEC Chairman, Professor Jega called for the cancelation of the exercise due to irregularities, which he took responsibility.
